Planning Your Medical Travel

Once you have made up your mind to undergo a cosmetic surgery procedure that is appropriate and selected a qualified plastic surgeon, next logical step is to start preparing for your medical travel.

Planning Checklist

- Schedule a pre-consultation with the surgeon. You may choose one or a combination of the following:

- Visit a local associate of the surgeon or his office in your home country.

- Have a telephonic consultation

- Use an online form

- Have an online chat using services such as Skype™

- Ensure that the surgeon and staff who is responsible for your care both before and after your surgery is fluent in your language.

- Have a clear understanding of the surgery charges and make sure that you understand what is included and what is not.

- Find out how your surgeon accepts payment i.e. cash, traveler's checks or credit cards. Have a clear idea how you will finance your procedure and travel expense. Find out about available financing options.

- Find out what vaccinations and lab work you require. Also, find out how far in advance you need to be there for consultation and surgery.

- Inform your local doctor in advance about the intended surgery for after care and take from him relevant medical records for the knowledge and information of your surgeon. Arrange for your surgeon to communicate and send information about your procedure to your local doctor.

- Find out your potential recovery and aftercare requirements such as length of your post procedural stay and follow up visits if any.

- Find out about emergency care providers in the country you are traveling to and at home.

While making your travel arrangements, consider the following points

- Where will you stay immediately before and after surgery while recovering?

- Which airport is closest to the practice of your surgeon?

- Arrange for requisite documents such as your passport and visa.

- Is foreign currency required or traveler's checks will do?

- Who will drive you to back to your hotel after surgery and help in post op care?

While packing for your trip, you may need stuff in addition to typical travel supplies.
Helpful items after surgery may include:

- Special piece of clothing that is easier to put on/take off after the procedure. It may include shirts that button in front, pants with elastic waist etc.

- You may require special compression garments or a surgical bra.

- Don’t forget to buy in advance and take along pillows for the neck, body or back for supporting specific areas after surgery

- Adequate sun protection such as a hat, scarf or sunscreen
